+ − + + + → + H 2 O H NO O 5 . 1 NH 2 2 2 4 (1) In the SHARON (Single reactor High activity Ammonia Removal Over Nitrite) process, partial nitrification is establishing by working at high temperature (about 35°C) and maintaining an appropriate sludge retention time (SRT). The SHARON reactor is operated as a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR, chemostat) without biomass retention, so the sludge retention time equals the hydraulic retention time. The SHARON process is very well suited to reduce the load of streams with high ammonia concentration, rather than to meet strict effluent standards. It is applied for treating sludge digestion reject water in order to relieve the main wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to which this stream is subsequently recycled. A full-scale SHARON process is operational since January 1999 at the Rotterdam Sluisjesdijk sludge treatment plant. In its original configuration, the SHARON process is operated under alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions, the latter serving for pH control by denitrification. Full-scale experience with the SHARON process has recently been described by van Kempen et al. (2001).

Practical experiences with start-up and operation of a continuously aerated lab-scale SHARON reactor.
Partial nitrification techniques, such as the continuously aerated SHARON process, have been denoted for quite a while as very promising for improved sustainability of wastewater treatment. Combination of such a SHARON process with the Anammox process, where ammonium is oxidised with nitrite to nitrogen gas under anoxic conditions, leads to cost-efficient and sustainable nitrogen removal from c...

Wall-to-bed (or wall-to-fluid) heat transfer issues in trickle bed reactors (TBR) has an important impact on operation and efficiency in this category of reactors. In this study, the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of trickle bed reactors was simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The multiphase behavior of trickle bed reactor was studied by the implementation of ...

Introduction The application and increasingly produce of colorants, particularly, synthetic dyes, are one of the main environmental and health concerns especially in industrialized countries. If this type of dyes is discharged into the environment without any control, many problems will arise. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the dyes from aqueous solutions using appropriate methods. The p...
متن کاملInfluence of operating parameters on the Apatite flotation kinetics
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the controllable operating parameters influence, including pH, solid content, collector, co-collector, and depressant dose, and conditioning time, on apatite flotation kinetics. Four first order flotation kinetic models are tested on batch flotation time-recovery profiles. The results of batch flotation tests and the fitting of first-order ki...
متن کاملCharacterization of hydromechanical stress in aerated stirred tanks up to 40 m3 scale by measurement of maximum stable drop size
BACKGROUND Turbulence intensity, or hydromechanical stress, is a parameter that influences a broad range of processes in the fields of chemical engineering and biotechnology. Fermentation processes are often characterized by high agitation and aeration intensity resulting in high gas void fractions of up to 20% in large scale reactors. Very little experimental data on hydromechanical stress for...
